Rep. Adam Smith, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th district, recently shared his views on various legislative and economic issues through a series of tweets. Smith, who has been in office since 1997 after succeeding Randy Tate, is known for his focus on healthcare and economic growth.
On May 13, 2025, Rep. Smith highlighted his introduction of the Grant Assistance and Technical Education (GATE) Act two years prior. He stated that the act aims to assist community-based health organizations in navigating federal grant processes and creating new grant opportunities. “Two years ago, I introduced the Grant Assistance and Technical Education (GATE Act), which would provide community-based health organizations with assistance navigating the federal grantmaking process and would create grant opportunities for these organizations.”
Later that day, Smith addressed concerns about declining activity at ports such as the Port of Seattle. He noted that reduced imports could hinder manufacturing capabilities and economic growth. “Ports, including the Port of Seattle, have seen fewer ships and fewer goods. If we’re not able to import goods that help us manufacture items, we’re not able to grow our economy.”
In another tweet from May 13, 2025, Smith criticized a Republican budget proposal he believes would negatively impact healthcare funding across Washington state by reducing Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) funds. He accused President Trump and House Republicans of prioritizing tax cuts for billionaires over affordable healthcare access. “The Republican budget would cost lives across our state by slashing funds for the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP). Instead of providing quality, affordable healthcare, President Trump and House Republicans are prioritizing tax cuts for billionaires.”
Smith was born in Washington D.C., grew up in Bellevue where he currently resides at age 57; he holds degrees from Fordham University and the University of Washington.
