Rep. Adam Smith, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, posted a series of statements on his social media account in July 2025 addressing local history, legislation, and community safety.
On July 18, Smith marked an important anniversary for one of the communities he represents, stating, “On this day in 1960, Mercer Island was incorporated into Washington State. Proud to serve and represent my constituents in this great area.”
Three days later, on July 21, Smith criticized recent legislative developments with a brief message: “The Big Ugly Bill hurts American families.”
Later that same day, Smith acknowledged local efforts to improve public safety in Seattle. He wrote: “I commend everyone who’s stepped up to the community safety forums this summer, directly allowing residents to create a better Seattle. We must work collectively together to improve public safety, end homelessness, and protect our parks, The Seattle Police Department reported a”
Smith has represented Washington’s 9th District since succeeding Randy Tate in 1997 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington D.C. in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue, Smith holds degrees from Fordham University and the University of Washington.
