Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, posted a series of statements on his social media account addressing recent national and legislative issues.
On January 7, 2026, Smith commented on an incident involving federal law enforcement in Minnesota: “The shooting of a civilian in Minneapolis earlier today by ICE is horrific. My team and I are tracking the situation closely. Initial reports are incredibly disturbing and we need a thorough investigation of the officer’s actions.”
Later that day, Smith addressed ongoing efforts by Democratic lawmakers regarding housing policy: “Democrats have been working to eliminate corporations in the single-family housing market. I suggest the President checks the End Hedge Fund Control of American Homes Act that @SenJeffMerkley and I will be reintroducing in the House and the Senate. We already did the work https://t.co/3gnLMmymIF” The referenced legislation seeks to restrict hedge funds and corporate entities from controlling large portions of residential real estate.
On January 8, Smith highlighted his participation in a televised discussion about Venezuela: “I joined CNN last night to discuss Venezuela. https://t.co/uQa09a0625”
Smith has represented Washington’s 9th District since replacing Randy Tate in Congress in 1997. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., Smith is currently 57 years old and resides in Bellevue. He holds degrees from Fordham University (BA, 1987) and the University of Washington (JD, 1990).
