Rep. Adam Smith, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, has recently addressed issues ranging from homelessness policy to legislative responsibilities and youth employment programs in a series of posts on social media.

On August 22, 2025, Smith criticized the Trump administration’s approach to homelessness policy. He stated, “The Trump administration has failed to take meaningful action to support Americans experiencing homelessness. The decision to cut funding for the Housing First initiative—an evidence-based program that provides permanent housing for those experiencing chronic homelessness—is yet” (August 22, 2025).

Later that day, Smith commented on legislative processes and executive involvement in appropriations bills. He wrote, “As legislators, our primary job is to pass laws to support the American people, and we need to recommit to this. We cannot have the President hijacking our appropriation bills.” (August 22, 2025).

On August 23, Smith highlighted his support for local programs aiding disabled youth in Washington State: “Excited to see programs such as BRIDGES (Building Real-life Independent Daily Living and Gainful Employment Skills), in action and benefitting our disabled youth in Washington State. Providing hands-on job experience and life skills helps our youth gain a purpose, confidence and” (August 23, 2025).

Smith has represented Washington’s 9th District since replacing Randy Tate in Congress in 1997 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington D.C. in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue at age 57, he holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
