Rep. Adam Smith, a U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, has recently used his social media platform to highlight partisan divides on economic and healthcare policy, as well as to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
On October 11, 2025, Smith posted, “Democrats want to help working people. Republicans want to help billionaires.”
The following day, on October 12, 2025, Smith addressed healthcare policy in a tweet: “Fact: Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for Medicaid and Affordable Care Act subsidies. Fact: Republicans are trying to take away healthcare from 15 million Americans. Fact: Health care costs are rising because Republicans are letting health care tax credits expire.”
On October 13, 2025, Smith marked a national observance with the message: “Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day to everyone in WA-09. Happy to celebrate the history, culture, and resilience of our Indigenous communities.”
Smith’s statements reflect ongoing debates in Congress regarding healthcare access and economic policy. The expiration of health care tax credits and eligibility for government programs have been central issues in recent legislative sessions. The Affordable Care Act, which expanded healthcare coverage and subsidies, has faced repeated challenges and proposed changes from Republican lawmakers.
Adam Smith, who succeeded Randy Tate in Congress and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997, was born in Washington, D.C. in 1965 and currently resides in Bellevue. He holds a BA from Fordham University and a JD from the University of Washington.
