Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, posted a series of statements on his official social media account addressing recent events and policy concerns.

On August 4, Smith shared details about a visit to the Indian Consulate in Seattle. He wrote, “I visited the Indian Consulate in Seattle this morning. I appreciate the Consul General for showing me your new downtown location. It’s my goal to continue to build the U.S.-India relationship and support the large group of Indian-Americans in our district. Thanks for having me.”

Hours later, on August 5, Smith commented on disruptions at a town hall event: “Today’s town hall was intentionally disrupted to attempt to silence a democratic conversation between a Representative and his constituents. This behavior is unacceptable. One of my staff members was physically assaulted during the chaos – an act that crosses every line of civil”.

Later that day, Smith addressed concerns regarding government oversight and aid management under the previous administration: “The Trump Administration’s waste and mismanagement of 500 metric tons of emergency food aid and $9.7 million worth of contraceptives demands an immediate investigation.

This intentional incineration of desperately needed aid supplies at the expense of the U.S. taxpayer is”.

Smith has represented Washington’s 9th District in Congress since replacing Randy Tate in 1997 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1965, Smith currently resides in Bellevue and holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
